Most people would incorrectly associate “Black Forest” carvings with the Black Forest of Germany, but the woodcarvings are actually from a town named Brienz in Switzerland. This area of Switzerland was known for its Victorian resorts, which catered to the wealthy and influential. A cottage industry built up to supply the Victorian tourists with keepsakes. From the mid 1800s to the early 20th century, the trade flourished.
Now the items are having a resurgence in the antique world. Buyers are paying premium prices to add these hand carved woodenwares to their collections.
Always on the lookout for interesting items, we purchased several black forest pieces on a recent trip to Paris and England.
